An Evening With Gary Snyder This Wednesday

Posted by GPGarry | Posted in Book Events | Posted on 30-11-2013

If you know anything about the beat generation scene for which San Francisco was a paramount backdrop, you know that Gary Snyder is a consummate legend in such circles. Snyder, a Pulitzer Prize winner for poetry, is one of only five writers who read at the legendary debut of Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl.” He is known for his many volumes of thought-provoking poetry which explores nature, spirituality, nativeĀ  culture, and so much more.

What better place to see Snyder than at ground zero for beat culture, City Lights Bookstore (who has published nine volumes of Snyder’s writing) in San Francisco. Snyder will be reading on Wednesday, December 4th, 2013 at 7:00 PM at City Lights. The event is free, so be sure to get there early as it is likely to fill up fast. This is an opportunity to see a real legend of poetry and beat generation culture, at no cost, and not one to be missed if you appreciate the written word and live in the Bay Area.

“Nightlife” at California Academy of Sciences

Posted by GPGarry | Posted in Nightlife | Posted on 14-11-2013

It is not everyday that you get to experience science, nature, creatures, drinking, music, and mingling among fellow curious San Franciscans all under one roof, but the California Academy of Sciences is making this happen every Thursday with their weekly “Nightlife” event. The event features a different theme every week and gives you a glimpse into the newest and most interesting projects of both CAA students and faculty and the San Francisco intellectual community at large.

The event takes place from 6 to 10 every Thursday and is 21+. Tickets are $10-$12. Cocktails are served and live music is provided to help set the mood for a social night of adult mingling; all of this while experiencing both the wonders of the academy’s many exciting exhibits and the special programming which changes weekly.

Whether you are a science nerd, interested in checking out some really interesting aquatic creatures up close, a generally intellectually curious person, or really even just an average Joe, you will be sure to delight in what the Academy has to offer each Thursday. Not to mention, most of us enjoy a good drink and the opportunity to mingle with like-minded local folks, so Nightlife at the Academy is a win-win in our books.

Check out the official website for the California Academy of Sciences for more information on weekly Nightlife programming, in addition to a list of the exhibits currently featured at the Academy. This stuff looks pretty impressive, and I’m sure looks a lot better in person with a cocktail or two in hand!
